In the rural villages of southern Mexico and Central America, artisans carve wooden bowls from logs. These oval bowls are called bandejas, or sometimes, bateas, which is Spanish for "flat-bottomed boat." The graceful vessels are then used for grinding corn and rolling tortillas. Artist Elizabeth McNitt, after being struck by their beautiful textured surfaces, began painting her original designs on the hand-carved bowls. Wired to hang on the wall vertically or horizontally, the bandejas are primarily decorative, though we've seen them displaying dried chiles, river stones, fruit, bread, and pine cones. They have a clear acrylic finish so they can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Simply put, these are beautiful and affordable art pieces that will complement virtually any home.
